Gay members of parliament
The following is a list of gay, lesbian, bisexual and/or transgender individuals who have been elected as members of the House of Commons of the United Kingdom, European Union, other devolved parliaments and assemblies of the United Kingdom, parliaments of the countries that preceded the United Kingdom and also members of the non-elected House. There are now 61 out LGBTQ+ MPs in Parliament.
We've had a look through the new crop of MPs to count how many identify as LGBTQ+ and how many of those are new to the Houses of Parliament. This page shows the Members of Parliament in the House of Commons who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender on 21 April This data may have changed since this Parliament began due to by-elections or resignations. 64 out LGBTQ+ MPs were elected on 4 July, representing per cent of the total MPs: 50 Labour MPs, 7 Liberal Democrats, 5 Conservatives, 1 Scottish Nationalist and 1 Green.
30 were incumbents, while 34 are new MPs. This is a decline from the pre-election high of 67 LGBTQ+ MPs in the House of Commons but an increase from the election. These new LGBT MPs bring a blend of activism, professional expertise, and community-focused policies to Parliament. Their diverse backgrounds promise to invigorate parliamentary debates and policy-making, reflecting the changing face of modern Britain.
The UK has made strides towards equality in recent years — with the same-sex marriage bill getting cross-party support in the Commons in According to research by the New Statesman , the Tories put forward the most gay candidates — a surprise for some perhaps, considering the party had the most voters against gay marriage.
Within the Conservative party, gay candidates performed better than their straight counterparts, too. Out of the 10 seats Labour took from the Tories, three were won by gay candidates. Perhaps the most surprising aspect was how geographically and demographically spread-out the LGBT seat winners were. Scotland was the biggest winner — All LGBT people elected to the Commons this parliament are white, only six are lesbian and no transgender people were elected, despite the four trans candidates all performing better than the average for their party.
